Shakira plagiarize's again!

Some years ago, on May 7 of 2006, it was published in "La crónica de hoy", that the dominican composer Luis Días "the father of local rock", was planning to sue Shakira por stealing a refrain of one of his most popular songs. Días said that the phrase "baila en la calle de noche, baila en la calle" from "Hips don't lie", was written by him in 1984 for a song called "Baila en la calle", that is now used as the oficcial anthem of the dominican carnaval. Another important puerto rican singer, Jerry Rivera, said in the same publication that Shakira didn't asked for permission to use part of the theme "Amores como el nuestro", in the same song.

It seems that the lawsuit never proceded, because I didn't found anything else online, but the recent rumor about Shakira being sued for plagiarism on "Waka, waka", made me look for recent updates. I found that the person who was supposed to sue Shakira, was Wilfrido Vargas and that he supposedly wanted $11,000 dollars, since a refrain from "waka, waka" (this time for Africa), was used on one of his songs called "El negro no puede". This song was famous in the 80's and performed by Las Chicas del Can. But Vargas affirmed in an interview on CNN "in spanish", that he couldn't sue her, since he had taken that refrain from another source, "I took this song from the same source Shakira did". Shakira herself recognized that she used a refrain from "Zangalewa", in order to pay an homage to tradition and african folklore.

So sad for Shakira, since this is not the first time that she is exposed to the media for plagiarism. It seems that she, and also Wilfrido Vargas, are making money on some other people's work... and they are not even mentioning the persons's name. This is, at least for me, a great disappointment and injustice, but I guess that is this is the way the entertainment business is like.

Pero Vargas afirmó en una entrevista en CNN "en español", que no podía demandarla, ya que el mismo había tomado ese estribillo de otra fuente. "Yo he tomado esta canción de la misma fuente que la tomó Shakira." La misma Shakira reconoció el haber usado un estribillo de "Zangalewa", para rendir homenaje a la tradición y folclor africanos.

Muy triste para Shakira, ya que no es la primera vez que la exponen en los medios por plagio. Parece que ella y Wilfrido Vargas, están haciendo dinero con el trabajo de otra persona... y ni siquiera mencionan el nombre de la misma. Esto es, al menos para mi, una gran decepción e injusticia, pero supongo que esta es la manera en la que el negocio del entretenimiento es realmente.

This time for Africa!

There's no doubt that Diane von Furstenberg was inspired by Africa on her Spring-Summer collection, since most of her dresses have african motives such as: animal print (tiger, snake, etc.), wood beading, embellishement, macramé and lots of colors that remind us the Serengueti (red, orange, brown, yellow, gold, purple and blue).
